Support those affected by hurricanes!

On Saturday April 16th, 2016, Ecuador and Japan were hit with powerful earthquakes and multiple aftershocks. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck northern Ecuador on Saturday April 16th resulting in at least 272 people killed and 2,527 people injured, according to the government of Ecuador. A magnitude 6.2 quake struck Japan on Thursday April 14th, followed by a magnitude 7.3 quake on Saturday April 16th. More than 40 people have been confirmed dead and 1,100 injured in Japan. Through the Ecuador and Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, we show our solidarity and support for the communities affected in both Japan and Ecuador.

In the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake, our community at Box has the opportunity to come together to support Box.org nonprofit partners involved in the disaster recovery efforts in Nepal.

The W.H.O. has declared COVID-19 a pandemic and public health emergency of international concern. Bright Funds Foundation has established the 2020 Coronavirus Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Fund. According to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, supporting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are key to limiting the spread of any infection, especially those that are spread by close contact. Increasing access to WASH resources will help limit the spread of coronavirus and other infections. Supporting areas with poor access to medical healthcare means providing access to clean water for handwashing and other vital hygiene practices. This will help limit the spread of all viruses and other infections. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations' initiatives to provide short-term and long-term response and recovery. Through a single tax deductible donation to the Fund, you can help multiple organizations' initiatives to provide short-term and long-term response and recovery. Our Fund approach is informed by expert and local recommendations, based on up to date information from disaster philanthropy and nongovernmental organization networks. The Fund's strategy is similarly dynamic and responsive: as information on local communities needs becomes available, we will update the organizations in this Fund, directing donations towards specific organizations doing work in the areas most affected. We have initially selected organizations that are on the ground assisting with immediate relief needs, including rescue efforts, medical assistance, and providing access to clean water, food and shelter. Hurricane Maria was the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1928. As of October 8, the hurricane has caused at least 81 deaths: 36 in Puerto Rico, 30 in Dominica, 5 in the Dominican Republic, 4 in the contiguous United States, 3 in Haiti, 2 in Guadeloupe, and 1 in the United States Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico has suffered catastrophic damage, including destruction of its previously damaged electrical grid. On October 6, a little more than two weeks after the hurricane, 89% still had no power in Puerto Rico, 44% had no water service, and 58% had no cell service.

This fund is to support organizations that are driven to alleviate and eradicate poverty on a local, regional, and global level. The World Social Summit identified poverty eradication as an ethical, social, political and economic imperative of mankind and called on governments to address the root causes of poverty, provide for basic needs for all and ensure that the poor have access to productive resources, including credit, education and training. The COVID-19 crisis has brought about so many challenges to our world. One that is extremely important to address is hungry children. For many, schools remain closed, parents are out of work and millions of children have lost their access to the only food they may receive on a daily basis. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that at least 310 million children are fed at school. That is a staggering amount of children who are hungry and are in dire need of support. As we enter a new phase of the virus and head into the winter months, this crisis will only get worse. No kid should ever go hungry. So, how do we help? Act Now! A contribution to this fund is evenly distributed between the following non profit organizations & matched by Cisco.

Charities that enable people in extreme poverty to improve their quality of life. Focus areas emphasize promoting economic self-sufficiency and empowering community leaders for compounding impact, and going beyond saving lives to reducing concrete measures of acute suffering. Charities selected had low overhead and high transparency in their activities with high effectiveness-per-dollar as determined by watchdogs such as Giving What We Can and GiveWell, and on the ground as opposed to policy or research and development work.

Before advancing to strike China, Typhoon Mangkhut, a powerful storm 550 miles wide, pummeled the Philippines, leaving destruction in its path. If you want to help those affected by the typhoon, this fund consists of the organizations the New York Times offered as a few of the organizations involved in recovery efforts.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and many more injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey on Monday, just 50 miles from the Syrian border. Since the earthquake there have been hundreds of aftershocks. The strongest was 7.5 magnitude, adding to the devastation. Many of the hardest-hit communities are in northwestern Syria, where people who have already been displaced several times by the ongoing conflict are among those whose homes were destroyed in the quakes. They are without adequate shelter, food and basic necessities as temperatures plunge well below freezing.

World Humanitarian Day, recognized each year on August 19th, honors humanitarian aid workers for their bravery and sacrifice when providing relief to those in need. Humanitarian relief workers are often exposed to dangerous environments and harsh conditions when providing relief in an effort to ensure the wellness of our world's most vulnerable and reducing suffering, putting their own safety at risk to do so. The following organizations provide humanitarian relief in a multitude of ways to communities around the globe experiencing a crisis.
