Feeding the Hungry in South Africa Fund
I invite you to be a part of feeding the hungry living in poverty in Egoli South Africa and the surrounding area. Today, a few times a week, the neediest of people of Egoli get a light meal brought in by the local Mountain View Community Centre of porridge, bread, and sometimes chicken broth soup.
Through this fund and volunteer distribution efforts, we would like to provide additional food in Egoli by delivering food to each household they can prepare on their own with water. The goal of this fund is to provide at least a bag of food (6 meals) to every person in Egoli (~7,000 people), as far as funding and distribution resources allow. This fund can also provide food to people in other squatter camps in the area (~25,000 people).
Arrangements are also being made by the International Sports Federation & Chick-Fil-A for 70 gap year students to visit Egoli and the surrounding areas in January 2023. One of the many things these students plan is to do us pack and distribute food in Egoli. Dave hopes to be there in January 2023 with Cisco's Time2Give support to report back on the great work there!
Why start in the Egoli area and why now? Here's my story...
In July 2018, I (Dave Dibert, a Cisco employee) went with my family to Cape Town South Africa to help those in need and my time was graciously supported by Cisco through the "Time2Give" program. We visited homeless shelters, schools, a children's center, and people living in poverty in an area known locally as Egoli outside of Cape Town South Africa. In Egoli, many people live in tin shacks with dirt floors and the unemployment in that area is about 70%. We gave out clothing, shoes, and food to the people there, walked around and talked to them, and realized how many children of Egoli are undernourished and in need of hope. The photo on this page is the team serving these "lovely people" there! (See links to more photos and videos below)
Through the amazing support of Cisco and 37 individual supporters (mostly anonymous Cisco employees), we raised >$144K dollars from 2018-2022 which bought land near Egoli to house the Mountain View Dream Centre! With the additional help of other organizations, we build the Mountain View Dream Centre, a mini-health clinic, and a training workshop known as "Hands of Honor". As a next phase, we worked with the International Sports Foundation (ISF) and a Cisco Bright Fund to begin the construction of an astroTurf multi-sport 5-a-side soccer field so the youth have a safe place to play, spend time and build good relationships.
Then in June 2022, we had a major setback when the Cisco fund we had was unfortunately canceled due to an unforeseen situation outside of our control that removed our sponsoring organization, so the soccer field construction came to a very abrupt halt. We have since found a potential new sponsor fund for the soccer field construction and I'm very pleased to say plans are in place to reinstate that fund in 2023! Nevertheless, while we wait for the approval process, we don't want to let these "lovely people" down and we are planning to help in even bigger ways during this 6+ month waiting period by providing food from Rise Against Hunger South Africa to every household in Egoli.
A special thanks to Cisco who is positively impacting our communities and people in poverty. South Africa plays an important role in helping Cisco achieve a goal of positively impacting one billion lives by 2025. Anyone can donate here and Cisco employees will also get a matching gift making your donation go twice as far! Cisco employees can reach out to Dave Dibert to help or hear more personal stories from his visits there.
Note: Cisco employees get a matching gift on this fund! Non-Cisco employees can support the Global Fund at https://www.brightfunds.org/funds/feeding-the-hungry-global

For those in Cisco that give to the fund, you may optionally contact Dave Dibert on Webex for a POAP as a memento of your support for these lovely people. Dave has no record of who gave, but as proof, just inform him of the date and approximate time of your donation, and if a donation of any amount came in near that time, and you are the first to ask, Dave will send you a POAP. POAPs are digital mementos, minted in celebration of life's remarkable moments. Each POAP is a gift from an issuer to collectors, in celebration of a special shared memory. By minting these memories to the blockchain, collectors build a rich tapestry of tokenized experiences which unlock a world of possibilities. More info about POAPs can be found at https://poap.xyz/. The POAP being issued can be seen at https://poap.gallery/event/65881
